How does the ER:YAG fractional laser work?

What does the skin regeneration process look like after fractional laser treatment?

After fractional laser treatment, the skin may go through several stages of regeneration and adaptation, which may vary depending on the individual patient and the intensity of the treatment. Immediately after the treatment, the skin is red and irritated, and swelling may occur. Within 1-3 days, scabs appear and the skin becomes dry. After 4-7 days, the skin begins to peel, revealing new tissue. Within 2-4 weeks, the skin becomes more even, firmer, and more radiant, revealing the full effects of the treatment.
After the treatment, it is important to use appropriate skin care, avoid direct sunlight and use creams with UV protection to protect the new, delicate skin and support the regeneration process.

Frequently asked questions about fractional laser treatments
Fractional laser treatment offers numerous benefits, including reducing wrinkles and fine lines, smoothing acne and post-traumatic scars, eliminating discoloration, reducing the appearance of pores, and improving skin firmness and elasticity.
Fractional laser treatment may cause some discomfort, described as a warm or burning sensation. Local anesthetic cream is often applied prior to the procedure to minimize pain. Most patients rate the pain as moderate to tolerable.
The recovery period after fractional laser treatment typically lasts 5 to 7 days. In the first few days, the skin may be red and swollen, then begin to peel. After about a week, the skin should return to its normal state, but the full effects of the treatment may take several weeks to become apparent.
The full effects of fractional laser treatment may be visible after several weeks to several months, depending on the intensity of the treatment and the individual characteristics of the patient’s skin. The process of collagen regeneration and synthesis continues, leading to a gradual improvement in the skin’s appearance.
Fractional ablative lasers are less invasive and a better choice for patients with thinner or more sensitive skin, while CO2 lasers are better suited for treating very deep scars and wrinkles. During post-treatment recovery, fractional ablative Er:YAG lasers typically result in less redness, swelling, and a shorter recovery time. The risk of infection is also lower due to the superficial nature of the laser. CO2 lasers can lead to more redness, swelling, and a longer healing period. There’s also a higher risk of side effects, such as discoloration and infection, due to deeper skin damage.
